Interpretation

Interpretation is oral translation, which is divided into simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation and whispered interpretation. In simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter listens to the speaker via headphones and speaks into the microphone, translating almost simultaneously, usually from a foreign language into the interpreter’s native language. In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter stands next to the speaker and translates when the speaker pauses, each taking turns speaking. Whispered interpreting (or chuchotage, in French) is when the interpreter sits or stands next to the person or people requiring interpretation and whispers the translation to them. Interpretation is required at various events with various forms of content.

Other types of interpretation include conference interpreting and court interpreting. Conference interpretation is practised at round-table discussions, conferences and other multinational meetings whereas court interpretation is performed by court interpreters who have been appointed by the Ministry of Justice to perform this function at various legal proceedings. Interpretation requires a great deal of knowledge, expertise and accuracy - and, above all, a high level of concentration.
